Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering is very rewarding, but it can also be a big personal commitment. Want to volunteer, but not sure what is involved? We’ve put together the following volunteer descriptions to help you choose the right position for you. We hope to hear from you very soon!

Volunteer Opportunities:

Meal Delivery Driver/ Security Check -Required for Bolton and Orangeville

Time Commitment: 1 hour (approximately), over the noon hour.

Minimum Contribution: Once a week or biweekly for approximately one hour.

Description:Deliver hot meals to residents in your community.  Volunteer drivers pick up hot meals at one of three locations closest to them and deliver the meals to clients within a specified area. Route sheets and maps are provided with any special instructions. Drivers also act as security checks for clients, ensuring that clients are safe and follow up with CMOW staff if a situation occurs.

Requirements:Must be friendly, reliable and enjoy spending time with seniors. A police check (no cost to volunteer) is also required and driver must have their own vehicle.

Meal Pick Up and Delivery Locations:Meals are picked up Monday to Friday, around the noon hour, at the Vera M. Davis Centre for Bolton and Caledon routes; at Caledon East for Caledon East and area residents; and Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Lord Dufferin in Orangeville for Orangeville residents (location closest to volunteer and volunteer can choose day of the week that works best for them). Delivery bags must be returned to specified dropoff locations after delivery. 

Reimbursement and Training:Mileage is paid and training will be provided.

FAQs

What if I am sick or going away on vacation?Do I have to find someone to take my shift?

No, our staff will find a volunteer to fill in for you if you’re sick. If you are planning to be away for a period of time, we ask that you give us as much notice as possible so that another wonderful volunteer can pick up your shift.

Will I deliver to the same people each time I drive?

Yes, you will be assigned a specific route and will generally be delivering to the same clients each time enabling you to get to know some really great people!

In-Home Friendly Visiting

Time Commitment: 1 hour (approximately).

Minimum Contribution: Once a week for approximately one hour.

Description:Provide companionship to seniors in your community by visiting clients in their home at a mutually agreed upon time, once a week.  Volunteers are paired up with a client and weekly visits are arranged (by CMOW staff). Participate in friendly activities such as puzzles or cards, or just chatting with residents. Occasionally assist with local shopping, appointments or social outings. Volunteer provides monthly reports to office staff. Telechats are friendly phone calls with clients.

Requirements:Must be friendly, reliable and enjoy spending time with seniors. A police check (no cost to volunteer) and valid driver’s license is also required. 

Reimbursement and Training:Milage is not reimbursed, but training will be provided.

FAQs

Would I use my own car if we decided to go out shopping or for a coffee?

Yes, if you have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.

What if I feel the client and I are not a good match?

We try to match clients and volunteers that have similar interests.  We will provide support and are always looking for feedback.  If you feel a match isn’t working for you we would definitely try to find a client that might be a better fit.

TeleChat

Minimum Contribution:Once a week

Description:TeleChatting consists of weekly telephone calls with a senior in your community.Calls can be made from your home at a mutually agreed upon time. Volunteers also provides monthly reports to office staff.

FAQs

How long should I expect a TeleChat conversation to be?

The chats might not be that long in the beginning but as you and the client get to know each other they tend to naturally lengthen. There is no set amount of time established but some clients are quite chatty!

You would contact the office and we would handle it from there.We have our client€™s emergency contact numbers and would make sure the client was safe and accounted for!

Special Event and Fundraising Assistant

Time Commitment: Depends on event.

Minimum Contribution: Occasionally, when events are scheduled. 

Description:Help out on trips, special luncheons and CMOW fundraisers. Great for those interested in event planning!

Requirements:Must be friendly, reliable, able to work in a team environment and enjoy spending time with seniors. A police check (no cost to volunteer) is required.

Training:Volunteers may undergo some training.

Office Administrative Support

Time Commitment: 1 – 3 hours (approximately), depending on the volunteer’s availability.

Minimum Contribution: No minimum

Description:Assist with a variety of office tasks including: mailings, phone surveys, assisting clients with food orders, and much more!  

Requirements:Must be friendly, reliable, able to work in a team environment. A police check (no cost to volunteer) is required.  

Training:Volunteers may undergo some training.

Fundraising

Time Commitment: 1 – 3 hours (approximately), depending on the volunteer’s availability.

Minimum Contribution: No minimum

Description:Assist the Marketing and Fundraising Committee with their efforts. For example, help with fundraising campaigns and projects.

Requirements:Must be friendly, reliable, able to work in a team environment. A police check (no cost to volunteer) is required.  

Training:Volunteers may undergo some training.

Seniors Health and Wellness W.I.S.E Social Program Assistant

Time Commitment: Coordinators usually require 3 hours of help late morning or over the noon hour depending on the program being run.

Minimum Contribution: Weekly, bi-weekly, or once a month.

Description: We have programs running at several buildings throughout Caledon, Orangeville and Brampton every Tuesday through Friday. Assist with the Seniors programs which provide participants with interesting, educational and fun activities. The programs promote and support health, wellness and independent living.  Whether it is a guest speaker or entertainer, a seasonal party, special luncheon, exercise class, discussion group or a creative activity.

Requirements:Must be friendly, reliable, able to work in a team environment and enjoy spending time with seniors. A police check (no cost to volunteer) is required.

Training:Orientation and training will be provided.

Board of Directors

Time Commitment: Approximately 8 hours per month

Minimum Contribution: 1 year minimum commitment

Description: The Board of Directors governs Caledon Meals on Wheels in accordance with its Articles of Incorporation, its By-laws, governance policies, and all relevant legislation.  The Board adheres to a model of governance through which it provides strategic leadership and direction to Caledon Meals on Wheels by establishing policies, making governance decisions and monitoring performance related to the key dimensions of Caledon Meals on Wheel’s business plan as well as its own performance.

Requirements: The CMOW Board seeks applicants who have knowledge and skill in, but not limited to, the following areas:

  • Financial Management
  • Legal
  • Fundraising/ Resource Development
  • Policy Development
  • Governance
  • Health/ Social Service Administration
  • Human Resources
  • Community Outreach/ Communications

CMOW also encourages applicants who reflect the diversity of the community, and individuals who have played leadership roles in local community groups, businesses or organizations. Being a provider of health and community support services for seniors, we also are seeking individuals who are passionate about this sector, and are comfortable with and enjoy leading change.
